You Live in Rome
Have you noticed? The nation in which you live and homeschool your children is daily becoming more hostile to professing Christians, particularly those who actually walk the walk. When Brit Hume, a Christian and Fox News analyst, suggested that Tiger Woods could find forgiveness in Jesus Christ, the outcry was scarcely less shrill than if he had called Tiger the “N” word. My guess is that if Mr. Hume had advised Tiger to seek answers within his own chosen Buddhist belief system, no outcry whatsoever would have ensued. Why? Because doing so would not have suggested that something is lacking in Buddhism, like real forgiveness and eternal salvation from real sins against the living God.
Make no mistake. The world, even many who call themselves Christian, do not want real Christians actually walking the walk. They consider it best, in order to maintain domestic tranquility, that Christians keep their beliefs about sin, forgiveness, and salvation to themselves. Well, maybe on Sunday morning, in your own church of course—with all the windows and doors tightly closed—you might even shout about your faith. But for heaven’s sake (can I say that?) don’t bring your faith to the public square! You might offend a Muslim, a Buddhist, or a Jew.
Sally Quinn, a reporter for the Washington Post, wrote that the problem with Brit Hume’s comments were that they suggested that Mr. Wood’s Buddhism was not as good as Christianity for dealing with his problem. And what did Ms. Quinn think was the ultimate purpose of either faith? She proposed that the value of either Christianity or Buddhism was “getting through hard times.” I’m sorry, but that view is more than wide of the mark. If that is all a religion is good for, we are of all men most miserable.
The bottom line is this. Christianity will always be feared and hated by those at the top. This was so in Jesus’ day, and it is so today. The powers that be who wish to retain their power, the intellectuals who prefer the argument above the answer, will never give place to the claims of Christ. Christianity is an offense precisely because it is true, precisely because it exposes the inadequacy of any other religion to deal triumphantly with sin and redemption.
Christianity, or at least an outward recognition of its prevalence and power, was once the norm in this country. Even though opponents did exist, there was a very dominant Christian consensus. Sadly, this is no longer the case. Politicians, professors, and minor potentates no longer feel the need to give even a cursory bow to Christianity in anything they say or do. The lid is off. You now live in a Roman province. Is that a centurion at your door?
My guess is that if Mr. Hume had advised Tiger to seek answers within his own chosen Buddhist belief syste
You don’t know how it affects me to read what you have written. I want this to still be the greatest nation on earth. I am still hopeful that God will hear our prayers and save this country.
Yessir Mr. Beuligmann, so very true. I expect Christians in the USA to begin feeling more heat in the near future. That is IF they remain faithful. I also think we would see more persecution if Christians began acting upon their convictions.
I suspect men in the pulpit have added to the moral decline in our nation by neglecting words like ’sin’ and ‘repent’ from their ‘talks’. I dare not refer to them as sermons. It’s funny, since the His Majesty’s preaching was prominently ‘repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
Thank you for your service to Him
