It’s My Life!

By Mark Beuligmann, August 13, 2010 11:26 am

Have you ever heard someone say, “It’s my life. I should be able to do what I want with it?” Of course you have. I would be willing to bet that most of us have said that, or at least felt it, at various times in our lives. We usually say it when a parent or other authority figure is making demands upon us that we resent. Continue reading 'It’s My Life!'»

Head of the House

By Mark Beuligmann, August 9, 2010 10:24 am

Dad, are you the head of your household?

I think many men today, even (especially?) Christian men, do not know what it is to be head of their household. They don’t even know that they need to be. In many cases, it is because their fathers did not know either, and they were thus unable to teach their sons. This failure can be traced back to the Garden of Eden. Right On Schedule

By Mark Beuligmann, August 3, 2010 2:18 pm

I suspect that making the transition from a public or Christian school to homeschooling is probably one of the most challenging things a parent can attempt. Whereas before you just bought the children some new clothes, a few pencils, and a book bag—and dropped them off at school (I know, Mom. It’s not quite that simple.) now all the mysterious stuff that happened at school is up to you.

While I am in a suspecting mood, I also suspect that many parents, in trying to set a daily schedule for their home school, don’t look much past the public or Christian school for a model. Is there any other way? Continue reading 'Right On Schedule'»

Ideology

By Mark Beuligmann, June 9, 2010 2:20 pm

Not infrequently, you will hear politicians chastise members of the opposing party for being ideologically motivated. They are implying that ideology is not a good starting point for creating laws or policy. Continue reading 'Ideology'»

Answer or Process?

Which is more important, giving the right answer—or working through the material? Before I answer that question, let’s work through it. Continue reading 'Answer or Process?'»

Is Health Care a Right?

By Mark Beuligmann, March 23, 2010 3:01 pm

We have been told, as the debate over health care reform unfolded, that health care is a right. Only one side in the debate was making this claim. I will leave it to you to guess which side.

Is health care a right?

Let’s begin by asking the deep philosophical question, “What is a right?”

Obtaining the Prize

By Mark Beuligmann, March 3, 2010 4:56 pm

Every time the Olympics come around again, I am struck by the unique spirit and drive of the Olympic athletes. They come from around the world, having spent the previous four years in rigorous training. That training often includes rising before the sun most every morning, and doing a great deal of preparation and work before most folks roll out of bed. It takes serious and sustained desire, ambition, self-denial, and just raw work, to maintain the peak of physical and mental fitness. Whole families, and even towns sometimes, become involved in the athlete’s training and support. All of this is done so that the athlete can travel to some distant corner of the globe to get one shot at gold—and perhaps miss it by a few hundredths of a second. Any little thing that goes wrong can throw the first place contender completely out of the medal running. Everyone knows that if you are out of the medals, you virtually cease to exist in terms of the glory of the Olympics. The journalists stop talking about you very quickly, and no one remembers your name. Continue reading 'Obtaining the Prize'»

You Live in Rome

By Mark Beuligmann, January 14, 2010 3:40 pm

Have you noticed? The nation in which you live and homeschool your children is daily becoming more hostile to professing Christians, particularly those who actually walk the walk. When Brit Hume, a Christian and Fox News analyst, suggested that Tiger Woods could find forgiveness in Jesus Christ, the outcry was scarcely less shrill than if he had called Tiger the “N” word.
