Is There Biblical Justification for Placing Women in Combat? Is there biblical justification for placing women in combat? To draw a biblical and logical conclusion to this question, we will review the differences in responsibilities between men and women, and why women should not participate in combat. There are distinct differences in responsibility between men and women. It is the man’s responsibility to protect woman; to make sure no harm comes to her. A woman’s responsibilities are mentioned in Proverbs 31:10-31, and there is no mention of war as a responsibility. Therefore, it is man’s job to go to war. Men protect women, not vice versa (Numbers 32:26-29). God told Moses to gather men for the army, and only men (Deuteronomy 25:11-12). The Bible tells us that women are not to dress as men do, meaning to not wear armor (Deuteronomy 22:5). Some make mention about Deborah and Jael going to battle. Deborah was not a soldier, and Barak pleaded for Deborah to come with him. This amounted to shame for the Israelite army because it violated the order of creation, which said she should not go. Another example was Jael. She ended up killing Sisera, the leading captain of the Canaanite army. She was at the battleground only to help her husband with his tent. She was there strictly to do “housework duties.” She did not violate the order of creation because of this fact. There is no biblical justification for placing women in combat. “Our little ones, our wives...will be there...but your servants will cross over, every armed for war” (Numbers 32:26-29). Therefore, I can conclude that is it clearly unbiblical for women to engage themselves in war. |
