Home education and science courses present a challenge for many. For many homeschooling families, the basics are not too difficult to cover. Reading, writing, and arithmetic, at least at the early levels, are straightforward, and there are many texts available to help parents in their teaching efforts. There are other subjects, however, which may not be as easy for a parent to teach or a child to learn. Science is one of these subjects.
Promote an interest in and a love for science
In the early years, kindergarten through about fourth grade, there are many simple lessons and experiments that can provide an excellent base for later learning in science. One of the most important things for a parent to remember at this time is to promote an interest in and a love for science. I have found that too many children hate science by the time they reach high school. They fear its difficulty and avoid it, at all costs. If parents can show their children the link between God’s creative power and the awesome complexity of our world, maybe they will be less intimidated and more fascinated and challenged by science.
Science and Nature
Young children can learn a great deal about the world, particularly about biology or perhaps geology, through nature walks. These journeys can bring a science book to life, as a child observes insects and birds, notes the difference between various trees, or collects various rock specimens.
Science in the Kitchen
At home, the kitchen is a good place to introduce a child to chemistry. Mixing ingredients, measuring and baking are very similar to many simple, scientific procedures. Also, there are chemistry books available in your library which can show you how to conduct simple experiments with household items.
Basic Physics at Home
If dad is a handyman, young children will enjoy learning basic physics with his help. He can teach them about mechanical advantage, using pulleys or inclined planes. Actually working with wedges, screws, and so on will show children that formulas and theories do not have to be frightening, but actually make sense.
A solid early science foundation gives high school students a major advantage
If a child has a good background in all of these areas of science, he will be way ahead when he reaches high school because he is familiar with some of the terminology and procedures of science, he can look at his textbooks with recognition, if not immediate understanding. The intimidation so many feel with advanced sciences will be absent, and so the battle is half won.
Parental involvement can ignite curiosity and establish a foundational understanding
You, the parent, can help your child through most advanced science texts. Science is an important field of study for the Christian who is interested in it. I really believe that a parent’s involvement can spark the interest and provide the basic understanding necessary for their children to excel in science.
