Creating a Comprehensive Educational Program
Planning your child’s entire educational program can be a time-consuming task. Even if you are knowledgeable in every subject your child will study, actually teaching can be more complicated. If it happens that your child will be studying a subject that you never learned, your job will be even more difficult. You will have to study your child’s text in order to assure that he is doing his work correctly. If you can not fully understand a section or topic, you will have to research it in other books. In some cases, you may have to consult an expert: either a friend, or a teacher at a nearby school or college.
Prepare for the Subject in Advance
While you could learn a subject along with your child, and many families do just that, it would be probably be better if you studied it ahead of time. F If your child will be taking Algebra II or Chemistry next year, for example, learn as much as you can about the subject this year. If you don’t know the material, it is much more likely that the course will take extra time. Every time you have difficulty; you will need to spend extra hours doing research. If you have done this ahead of time, the actual teaching will be smoother and easier. Learning the subjects ahead of time will also give you direction. You will understand which topics are crucial to the subject, and which are trivial. You will be able to anticipate and allow time for areas of difficulty. You will have a better idea of when to give quizzes and tests, when to repeat materials, and when to skip problems.
Do You Require Assistance?
Studying a subject ahead of time will also let you know if you are capable of teaching it. You may discover that you can’t understand the course. You may realize your child is not ready for it. You might decide to hire a tutor if you do not have the time, you know is necessary to teach the course.
Learn Alongside Your Child And Explore New Ideas Together
If you are home educating your child, don’t let a difficult subject discourage you. It can be an excellent opportunity for you to increase your own knowledge as you teach your child. Trust the Lord to aid in understanding the subject, just as you ask for His help in training your child. Your efforts will be blessed.
