Constitution Week and Christian Citizenship

As you settle into the early rhythm of September in your homeschool, take time to reflect on the Biblical foundation of our constitution. Christian families have a timely opportunity to study the moral framework that undergirds the U.S. Constitution, liberty, and responsible citizenship. Scripture reminds us that “blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 33:12). This verse speaks first of God’s covenant people. It also teaches a universal truth that no nation can truly flourish apart from acknowledging God’s sovereign rule, His moral order, and His righteous law.

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, observed on September 17, commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. September 17–23 is Constitution Week. It is held annually inviting Americans to reflect on the liberties and responsibilities entrusted to us. For Christian parents, this observance provides a natural opportunity to teach our children how to view civil government through the lens of Scripture.

A Biblical View of Government

Scripture teaches that civil government is ordained by God to promote public order, commend what is good, and restrain and punish evil. (Romans 13:1–4) Yet civil government is never supreme to God’s law. Every ruler and institution remains accountable to God. Christians honor lawful authority while remembering that obedience to God must come first whenever human authority contradicts His commands. (Acts 5:29). This balance—respectful submission paired with unwavering allegiance to Christ—is central to a faithful Christian understanding of citizenship.

Teaching Liberty Through a Biblical Lens

Studying the founding of America through a biblical lens helps students grasp the relationship between personal responsibility under the lordship of Christ, the rule of law, limited civil government, and the preservation of a free Constitutional republic. The Founders recognized that liberty requires virtue, and virtue requires a moral order beyond human invention. Christians understand that such moral order is rooted in God’s law, not in human autonomy. Constitutional liberty is a precious temporal blessing, but the deepest and most enduring freedom belongs only to those who are freed by Christ to live faithfully before God.

Preparing Faithful Citizens

Grounding young people in a Christian worldview of civics equips them to honor God, evaluate political ideas with biblical discernment, respect lawful authority, and resist the false promise that the state can save. It trains them to recognize the dangers of statism, to understand the limits of government, and to see Christ, and not man, as the true King who rules over all nations. Most importantly, it prepares them to act as faithful stewards of the freedoms and responsibilities entrusted to them.

As we observe Constitution Week, may our homes be places where children learn that citizenship is not merely a civic duty, but an expression of Christian discipleship. True liberty flourishes when families cultivate virtue, uphold truth, and teach the next generation to live under Christ’s lordship. In doing so, we help form citizens who understand that while earthly governments rise and fall, only the kingdom of God endures forever.
