Description:

The Studying God’s Word Series is designed to have the student encounter the biblical text firsthand over a 36-week period. The goal of this curriculum is to go beyond the stories of the Bible and to have students read the Bible itself.

Preparing God’s People covers events in the Bible from Creation up through Ruth and Boaz in a chronological order. Students will learn about leading figures, including: Adam and Eve, Noah, Job, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Deborah, Samson, and Ruth. They will also learn how God called His people to the Promised Land and how His people wavered between disobeying God’s commands and repenting for their rebellion.

This course uses phonics principles as it teaches words with suffixes “-tion” and “-ion,” silent “e” words, word endings, spelling the three sounds of “wh” and “ch,” consonant digraphs with “f” and “ph,” prefixes, compound words, and irregular spellings. Vocabulary-building is emphasized through contextual exercises. Word-bank, crossword, fill-in-the-blank, and other exercises are included to help students gain familiarity with how words and sentences are constructed.

This course combines grammar and writing to teach students both the mechanics and the use of English. Grammar topics include a study of sentences with some diagramming, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and study and research skills. Writing topics use the five-step writing process and include: acrostic poems, book reviews, story writing, tall tales, compare-contrast essays, and research reports.

This work-text exposes students to such topics as writing a sentence, writing letters and book reports, using a dictionary and an encyclopedia, capitalization, proper punctuation, and recognizing and using various parts of speech. Sentence diagramming is included.

This course uses a series of stories and poems to teach students about the exploration and settlement of the New World. Students will learn about people and events of colonial America and the struggle for American independence; and will be introduced to such famous people as Christopher Columbus, Jonathan Edwards, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Betsy Ross. Comprehension questions and vocabulary building are used to develop greater depth of understanding.

This course provides students with a solid study of traditional mathematics concepts. Problem-solving strategies, critical thinking, estimation, and mental math are routinely stressed throughout. The material begins by reviewing facts regarding addition and subtraction and then presents topics such as multiplication of whole numbers, division by one-digit numbers and by whole numbers, and working with decimals and fractions. Students are also introduced to measurement, graphing, probability, and geometry.

This course both teaches and reviews the four basic processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). It also covers multiplying and dividing by two-digit numbers, estimation, square measures, writing decimals as fractions, and simple geometry. A major emphasis is placed on working with proper and improper fractions as the student works with adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions, as well as finding the least common denominator.
