Steadfast in the Harvest

1. Worldview Watch: Letter from the Leadership

Running the Race with Endurance

As October approaches, the initial enthusiasm of early September gradually yields to the steady rhythm of daily routines. Academic lessons become increasingly challenging, morning schedules feel more burdensome, and both parents and students may encounter what homeschoolers fondly refer to as the “October Slump.” During this period, it is vital to remember that Christian home education is not merely a sprint, but rather a long-distance endeavor requiring steadfast endurance and commitment.

In Hebrews 12:1–2, the apostle exhorts us: “Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” God has not called you to achieve perfection in every daily lesson plan; He has called you to remain steadfast in discipling your children for His glory.

This month also brings a rich historical milestone for Christian families: Reformation Day (October 31st). While secular culture shifts toward shallow distractions, Christian homeschoolers have the privilege of celebrating the providential recovery of biblical truth, the supreme authority of God’s Word, and the sacred responsibility of teaching Scripture to the next generation. May the bold faith of the Reformers inspire your household to run this academic race with renewed patience, joy, and spiritual conviction.

Living Faith: Bringing Church History & Reformation Day to Life

Reformation Week (October 25–31) offers an extraordinary opportunity to bring church history alive across your entire household. Rather than treating church history as a dry list of dates, you can weave the story of God’s providential preservation of His Church across multiple subject areas, engaging learners of every age while reinforcing that Christ is Lord over all knowledge.

Here is how your family can build an immersive, multi-subject Reformation unit study using traditional, Christ-centered learning:

📖 Reading & Theology

  • Biographical Literature: Read age-appropriate biographies of key Reformers such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, and William Tyndale. Discuss how their commitment to the authority of Scripture transformed Western civilization.
  • The Five Solas: Introduce older students to the foundational truths of the Reformation (Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria), comparing each principle directly with Scripture.

✍️ Writing & Language Arts

  • Theological Copy-work: Assign key verses (e.g., Psalm 46:1, Romans 1:16–17) or stanzas from historic hymns like “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” as weekly penmanship and grammar practice.
  • Essays on Conviction: Challenge high school students to write an essay evaluating how William Tyndale’s sacrifice to translate the Bible into English paved the way for modern religious and civil liberties.

🗺️ Geography & History Mapping

  • 16th-Century European Mapping: Map the key cities of the Protestant Reformation—including Wittenberg, Geneva, Zurich, and London. Trace how the recovery of biblical truth spread across Europe.
  • Impact of the Printing Press: Study the historical timeline of Gutenberg’s movable type printing press and its role in distributing God’s Word to ordinary households.

🎨 Art & Heritage Crafting

  • Illuminated Manuscripts: Teach students traditional manuscript lettering techniques, inviting them to illustrate and decorate a favorite Scripture verse on parchment-style paper.
  • Woodblock-Style Printmaking: Recreate 16th-century printmaking techniques using soft foam boards or linoleum stamps to produce custom Reformation emblem prints.

🥨 Heritage Cooking: Reformation Pretzels & German Stew

  • Bake Traditional Soft Pretzels: Bake traditional German soft pretzels with your children, sharing the historical tradition of how early European Christians shaped bread dough into folded arms to symbolize a child in prayer.
  • Prepare a Harvest Reformation Meal: Gather your family for a traditional European harvest dinner featuring hearty stews and apple dishes, reflecting on God’s faithful physical and spiritual provision.
